Last Hurdle Cleared

Today we got our FedEx package with our passports and tickets. Now we have everything we need to head to Kenya --- not that we are ready yet we still have to pack. But now there is nothing else we are waiting for.

For those of you who are interested (and may want to follow us on our journey), here is our flight itinerary:

Dep: Omaha July. 29, 11:55 AM Arrive: Chicago 1:25 PM Flight # 4276 American Air
Dep: Chicago 5:25 PM Arrive: London 7:05 AM (July 30) Flight # 296 British Air
Dep: London 10:20 AM Arrive: Nairobi 8:55 PM Flight # 065 British Air

Some Detailed Prayer requests:
1) Pray that someone will buy our Mini-van. We wanted to store our Odyssey, but all of our storage options fell through and we don't want to leave it in my parent's driveway for a year. If you are interested in buying it, let us know!

2) Pray that we may have favor with American Airlines on Wednesday. Although most of our flight is on British Airways (and BA allows us to have 3 checked bags per person) we start our journey in Omaha on American Airlines. (They do not permit 3 checked bags per person.) American sometimes does, but does not have to honor giving us 3 checked bags. Pray that we would not have to pay the extra $100 per checked bag on American Airlines.

3) Pray that we would be rested and have peace (especially our boys) before we travel. We know that traveling for many many hours with two toddlers and a pregnant woman isn't anyone's idea of "a good time," we know it could flow smoothly or it could be VERY challenging. Pray for a smooth trip - especially for Isaiah and Nate.

Many many more things to do in the coming days. Thanks for the prayers. Less than a week now.

-Todd

  1. AA & BA share frequent flier miles - be sure to bank all of those miles! Am praying for all things but the luggage for sure. That pushed me over the edge more than once. Probably because I was stressed and unrested, another reason to pray for all the above!

  2. Congrats on the tickets in hand. That is always a great feeling!

    Travel tips:
    1. Drink water whenever you get the chance. Since you can't pack liquids just be prepared to buy bottles of water whenever you have some moments. Especially Jenny needs to be drinking lots of water. When I arrived to Bolivia with our 3 kids aged 3 and under after more than 24 hours of travel I had lost my voice completely because I was nursing still and not drinking water. It wasn't pretty.

    2. Naturally, if you are drinking tons of water you are going to need to use the facilities whenever they are available: when you have moments during layovers in the airports and half hour before the flight lands on the airplane. This means diaper changes if that is applicable.

    3. Have your kids flown before? If they haven't I would recommend a prep session. Set up chairs like an airplane. Use a table as a check in desk. Talk them through and walk them through the steps of getting on the plane. When you are all seated in the chairs talk about how it will feel. Talk about what you expect from them during the flight. Talk about the ears. Talk about anything and everything that comes to mind that you think they will need to be prepared for.

    4. Speaking of ears, there are bunches of ideas for pain in the ears - should that happen. Some kids don't notice it, others are miserable. things I have seen work: cotton balls in the ears, child earplugs, chewing gum, suckers or hard candy, pacifiers, ear-buds plugged into something distracting like a iPod or video player, children's pain killer or Benadryl takes the edge off and even aid sleep and yawning.

    5. You stay cool the kids stay cool.

    6. You stay cool the other passengers stay cool.

    7. You stay cool the flight attendants stay cool.

    8. Stay cool means: relax, smile lots, be friendly, have fun with your kids, err on the gracious side rather than the harsh side when dealing with 'issues' with the kids or 'issues' with unexpected changes, over all just enjoy the journey.

    9. Blessed are the flexible for they shall not become bent out of shape.

    10. Don't miss a flight for luggage. If it happens that a piece of luggage doesn't show up where it is supposed to be make a report with someone (get names and phone numbers) and then don't miss your flight. The lost piece can be found when you arrive at you final destination. Getting placed on a different flight is much more difficult.

    11. Dress: Easy on, easy off shoes are best for everyone. Clothing that breathes and is not tight fitting is helpful. Having a thin jacket that can be easily stuffed into your carry-on is ideal for temp changes.

You guys are going to do great! You are smart and capable. Above all, God is with you.

I will be praying for you as you pack and fly. Favor will shine on your path. Blessings!
